Almost every VPS provider lists DDoS protection as a standard feature in 2026. The label alone doesn't tell you much — protection can mean anything from a basic traffic filter that only kicks in after a few minutes of downtime, to a network-level mitigation layer that absorbs an attack before it ever reaches your server. Before assuming a plan covers you, it's worth knowing what to actually check.

Why this matters more in 2026

DDoS protection has become relevant for a wider range of sites, not just large e-commerce or gaming platforms: SaaS products, APIs, internal business portals and small hosting resellers are now common targets, often as collateral from automated botnet scanning rather than a targeted attack. A VPS with no real mitigation can go down from noise, not just from someone specifically targeting it.

What to check before trusting the "DDoS protected" label

• Always-on vs. on-demand. Some providers only route traffic through mitigation after they detect an attack in progress, which means the first minutes of a real attack can still take the server down. Always-on protection filters traffic continuously, before an incident starts.
• Network-level vs. server-level. Protection that happens upstream, at the network edge, keeps malicious traffic from ever reaching the VPS. Protection that relies on the server's own firewall reacting to traffic already means the server is absorbing the load first.
• Layer coverage. Volumetric attacks (raw bandwidth) are different from application-layer attacks (e.g. HTTP floods targeting a specific endpoint). A plan that only mitigates volumetric traffic won't help against a targeted application-layer attack.
• Clean traffic guarantees. Ask what happens to legitimate visitors during mitigation — some filtering methods introduce latency or false positives that block real users along with the attack.
